How To Support My Senior Through The College Application Process

Parents are a critical part of a student’s college application team which includes the guidance counselor, recommenders, mentors and, in some instances, an independent educational consultant such as myself. For many students, choosing and applying to college will be the first adult decision they make.

Parents should NOT take over the process, dictate the list of colleges or write the essays (it’s pretty obvious when an essay is written by a 45 year old man vs. a 17 year old teenager).

Parents should outline any financial or resource limitations, provide guidance and support.

Most of all, parents should be the calm and stabilizing force. We are fortunate in the US to have approximately 3000 colleges and universities. What most people don’t tell you is that roughly 2/3 of those colleges and universities accept roughly 2/3 of the students who apply. So, the reality is that if you want to go to college, you can go to college and will likely go to a great one. The differentiator is what you do once you get there.
