To all college-bound Juniors and Seniors:
Deciding on your college major is a big decision. This decision takes not only time, but it requires you to be honest with yourself. Think about your passions and what excites you. You know that feeling you get when your eyes light up and suddenly you’re talking a mile a minute? What gives you that feeling? Find it and go after it.
Although I’m an education consultant, I can’t tell you what you should or shouldn’t study in college. There is no one perfect major, much like there is no one perfect high school schedule, or one perfect college.
Start by writing down your interests and your goals. During your junior and senior years, spend time doing activities that you love and researching potential college majors. If you have a fascination with clean eating and health, majoring in nutrition may be your perfect match. If you want to become a lawyer, a major in anything from political science to international relations to environmental science could be the ideal stepping stone.
If you already have a major or career in mind, congratulations you are off to an excellent start. If you are unsure, like most college-bounds students are, do not panic. During your freshman year of college, take courses in a variety of subjects that interest you. You may find inspiration in unlikely places.
Consider the job opportunities in different fields. It is important to check if there is an active market for whichever career you decide to go in to. Take time to explore your passions and to think realistically about your post-graduate options.
Deciding on a college major may be one of the most difficult milestones in your academic career; however, there is no need to worry. Do not settle on a major you dislike. Your college years are meant to be a time of personal reflection and growth, so remember that.
